Course ObjectivesDuring ELA, students will be able to demonstrate proper use of English language at the appropriate grade-level, work on three styles of writing: persuasive, informative, and explanatory, and practice comprehending and analyzing various styles of text. This year will continue to place an emphasis on developing language and vocabulary skills by working with Latin roots, prefixes, affixes, and grammar. Each class will be responsible for reading class novels, some of which they may be asked to purchase separately.
During History, students will be expected to implement and transfer skills learned from other subjects as well as develop the skills commonly found in historical texts. 8th graders will spend time with US History, while 6th/7th will work on World History. |
Attendance Policy:
Students are expected to be in class daily. Missing class will negatively affect student progress. Students who are absent are required to make up their work missed while they are away. It is the student’s responsibility to get the missing assignments from the “missing student folder” that will be filled by a classmate when that student is absent. If a student knows they will be absent, they can see me prior to their absence for their work. If a student is absent unexpectedly, they can check the class website, contact a classmate, email the teacher, or wait until they return to get all missing work. Deadline to submit missing assignments will be the week following the original assignment or as needed. All work must be turned in two weeks prior to the end of the grading period to be included in the final grade.
Academic Honesty Policy:
Any student caught cheating, regardless of if they are doing work pertinent to my class or not, will be immediately reported to the principal for disciplinary procedures.
Grading Policy:
Assignments will be graded on a points system. Grades will be updated at least every other week. They can be accessed online through Gradelink. Grades will come from projects, essays, tests, quizzes, classroom work, homework, and participation. Failure to submit an assignment will result in a zero; late work will have points docked. All work must be submitted two weeks prior to the end of the grading period in order to be included in the final grade.

Bullying
Our Lady of Lourdes is a bully-free campus. Bullying is defined as “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.” Any indication of bullying will result in teacher, principal, and/or counselor intervention.
